Below is music from my travels and from my childhood. I hope you enjoy!

South Korea

South Korea was one of my absolute favorite places that I had the privilege of living in. It's such a beautiful country and I still miss the trains there. There was a philly cheesesteak place I used to frequent in Korea near base. At this place I had made friends with one of the workers. He was super chill and hadn't gone for his mandatory service. One of the times I was there I had asked him for some music recommendations and this song was one of them. Fun fact about the Korean written language Hangul, Hangul was created because one of their Emperor's had wondered why his people couldn't read/write and was told it was due to the complexity of the characters and thus Hangul was created to make it easier for people to read/write.

Japan

Japan is also a very beautiful country and I definitely want to go back to visit. The first video is traditional music from the Edo period. During my time in Japan a god friend of mine invited me to a Shrine sale, Shrine sales are like small antique flea markets. At this sale I happened upon what i like to call my most prized possession, a well maintained book from the Edo period. This book is 200 years old and you can still read the pages (well if you can read Japanese from Edo) and the artwork is still vibrant. The second video is from one of my first experiences with Japanese culture. This song is from my first manga and anime, Bleach.

China

Moving onto China I wanted to include some traditional zither music. I enjoy listening to traditional Chinese music while I read. The second video is from a Chinese animation that I enjoy.

Brazil

When I was little I wanted to connect with the only part of my heritage I knew. My Grandpa on my mothers side is Portuguese. Me as a pretty ignorant child found this song thinking it was from an artist in Portugal, played it non-stop. Little did little me know it was from a Brazilian artist, same language wrong country.

Here is a picture of Indy (aka Tweaker Cat) a cat my partner's mother found on the side of the road.

  4. Hi Raine I really liked your choice of traditional Chinese zither music. It’s such a calming and beautiful sound, and I think it’s awesome that you enjoy listening to it while reading. That’s a great way to connect music with everyday life. I also thought your story about finding an Edo-period book in Japan was really cool it shows how much culture and history can be tied to music.
